Hair transplant is a very safe and relatively minor surgical procedure. The surgical procedure is very easy and it is done in an office setting with local anesthesia. The actual procedure may take a few hours and the discomfort during and after the procedure is very minimal. Most patients are prescribed mild analgesic to help cope with discomfort for the first couple of days. Very light bandage is put on the grafted area for the first night which can be removed easily the next day. Dr. Meshkin always call his clients the first night to review the after care instructions and recommends that his patients rest for the first night after the procedure.

There is a post op regiment for shampooing which is reviewed and needs to be followed for the first week after the procedure. The next day the light bandage can be removed and a post op care regiment for shampooing and cleaning begins. Small crusts may form on each of the grafts, and these are usually camouflaged by wearing a hat or using any existing hair that can be combed over the recipient areas. These scabs will start to fall off by 5-10 days after the surgery. The transplanted hair growing from the scalp may initially start to grow, but will shed eventually. Usually within approximately one month, much of the transplanted hair is shed. However the roots remain and will be in dormant stage for a few weeks before new hair start to grow back in. In about three months, the hair begins to grow and continues to grow at a normal rate. About six months after a hair transplant session, the transplanted hairs begin to take on normal appearance and will continue to grow for a lifetime.

Patients are instructed to stay away from strenuous activity for the first week after the procedure and gradually start their normal activity. Usually the patient can return to work even as early as the next day. The patient is instructed to take some post op medications for the first few days and can start to ween off after a couple of days. Patient can return to swimming, normal exercise routine, and get a hair cut after three weeks. Dr. Meshkin will stay in contact and follows up with his clients closely for the first months to make sure all the necessary post op care is followed, monitor the hair growth and answer any questions that may arise.
