Help! I'm Embarrassed About My Thinning Hair
Shedding hair is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. But if you shed more hair than normal, you could end up with noticeably thinning hair, affecting how you feel about yourself. This is when we can help.

If you see large amounts of hair in your comb or brush and less hair on your head, it can be embarrassing. Much of your sense of who you are is tied to outward appearance, and losing hair can deeply damage your self-image.

Dr. Michael Meshkin and Dr. Alister Meshkin, along with our dedicated staff at Meshkin Medical in Glendale and Newport Beach, California, want to boost your confidence by addressing hair thinning and other forms of hair loss.

You could develop thinning hair for a variety of reasons, and if seeing more and more of your scalp over time is alarming, there are ways we can help you feel better about yourself. Let’s examine how hair grows normally, why thinning occurs, and the options we can offer to treat it.

How does hair normally grow?

The four phases of the hair growth cycle (anagen, catagen, telogen, and exogen) cover the process of active growth, transition, resting, and shedding as new hair grows in. Hair shedding happens in the exogen phase, but it’s not the same as hair loss, as new hair grows in its place.

Hair loss, or alopecia, occurs when you lose more hair than you grow.

Approximately 90% of your hair is in the growing phase right now, a process that lasts up to eight years. In normal hair growth, 50-100 hairs shed in the exogen phase out of the 100,000 to 150,000 hairs you have on your head.

Why does hair thin?

Thinning hair and hair loss aren’t the same thing, though hair can thin as you lose it. Your hair may be thinning for several reasons:

  • Genetics, a family history of thinning hair
  • Aging
  • Hormonal changes
  • Chronic conditions such as alopecia, scalp psoriasis, autoimmune illnesses, and thyroid disease
  • Scalp infection
  • Hairstyles and treatments that damage your hair, such as perms, tight hairstyles, and relaxers
  • Emotional or physical stress
  • Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in zinc, iron, biotin, and proteins

How we can treat thinning hair

We offer a range of techniques to restore thinning hair:

Our special hair solution compound

This unique solution contains minoxidil, which is used on its own to treat hair problems, but we strengthen its effectiveness with our own formula to give your hair the best chance to thrive.

Finasteride

More commonly known by the brand name Propecia®, this oral medication reduces the level of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which contributes to male pattern baldness.

PRP therapy

This treatment uses your own blood. We concentrate the plasma in it, and inject it into your scalp to rejuvenate hair follicles and stimulate hair growth.

ACell® therapy

The ACell therapy device uses MatriStem UBM™ technology that starts and supports tissue regeneration for healing burned skin and surgical wounds. We apply its healing properties to restore thinning hair.

Whatever the reason for your hair-thinning problems, we have a solution to give you your hair back. Make an appointment with us at Meshkin Medical today to find the treatment that works for you to restore your hair.

We serve the Los Angeles area from our Glendale clinic, and Orange County, California, from our Newport Beach clinic.
