PRP Therapy for Hair Loss: Is It Right for Your Thinning Hair?
PRP therapy has become a popular option for helping athletes heal faster from injury and stay in the game, but it has uses in other areas, including addressing hair loss. Is this the right treatment to help your hair issues? Let’s find out.

Blood is crucial for delivering oxygen and other essential chemicals throughout your body, and plasma is the liquid part of blood that makes this possible. It comprises over half of the blood’s volume, and contains a variety of components, including electrolytes, water, immunoglobulins, coagulants, and proteins.

Plasma makes moving vital substances your body needs throughout your circulatory system possible. Treatments like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy use platelets located in your plasma to help your body recover more quickly from injury.

We can also use PRP to restore your hair, and here we’ll help you understand how that works.

Drs. Michael and Alister Meshkin, along with our dedicated team at Meshkin Medical, help our patients with their hair restoration needs, which include treatments like PRP therapy.

How PRP therapy works

Platelets are a component of your blood (the smallest one, in fact) and are essential in coagulation, or blood clotting, which stops bleeding when you’re injured and starts the healing process.

With PRP therapy, we use a centrifuge, a machine that spins rapidly, to separate and concentrate platelets in your blood plasma. We then inject this formulation where needed for treatment.

This allows us to utilize your platelets’ clotting and other growth factors to heal your body. Other than hair treatments, PRP therapy is commonly used in treating musculoskeletal injuries and helping tissue heal after surgery.

Its effect on hair loss

Injection of the PRP has several benefits. When using this method to help with hair loss, PRP can stimulate the hair follicles to promote thickness and prevent the premature shedding of follicles during the hair growth cycle. It also increases blood flow to hair follicles, which can trigger hair growth.

What to expect from treatment

We prefer to perform this treatment in the early stages of hair loss, when dormant follicles are easier to reactivate. To begin the process, we take a sample of your blood to run through the centrifuge and concentrate the blood platelets.

We inject the resulting concentration into areas of thinning and balding hair, which we repeat once a month for three months. After that, we do the injections every six months.

This treatment may also be combined with our ACell® therapy, if needed, to lengthen its effectiveness. Many of our patients see results in about three months.

PRP therapy uses your own blood to help you, and its application has taken hold in different areas of treatment. If you want to see what this restoration option can do for your hair problems, make an appointment with us today to get started.

We serve the Los Angeles area from our Glendale clinic, and Orange County, California, from our Newport Beach clinic.
